In 19th Century fiction, the vital role of the Saint Laurence River is clearly evident, as is, more generally speaking, the importance of rivers as a means of transport and communication. Many texts talk of excursions into the highlands, of drowning, of ghost ships.

The International "Water and Film" Events: added value

Yes, film is a technical invention, now over one hundred years old, that has become a cultural industry and a veritable institution, but we cannot really explain the attraction of this "dream machine" merely by analysing economic or sociological factors. Only an approach that combines anthropology and sociology can help to understand the success and sometimes even the fascination that the "seventh art" exercises in mass culture.

Sharpening debate on water issues through audiovisual media

Communication in general and film in particular are on the rise as regards supporting water sector initiatives. During 2006, one of the largest events on water and communication was the first International "Water and Film" events held from 17 to 21 March 2006 in Mexico, alongside the 4th World Water Forum. The events were co-organised by the International Secretariat for Water of Montreal, Canada, and the French Water Academy based in Paris, in partnership with the national water commission of Mexico (Comision Nacional del Agua - CONAGUA).
