  "Water, Film, Culture and Knowledge"

The launch took place on 20 November 2008 from 7p.m. to 9.30p.m. in the Paris city council's Water Pavilion, under the auspices of the Mexican and Turkish ambassadors to UNESCO.  

r. Eric Orsenna, member of the French Academy, accepted to make a presentation on the evening's theme. Interspersed with personal anecdotes, Mr Orsenna's presentation brought us closer to water-related issues in a very natural manner.

Mrs. Hulya Ucançu, President of the International Jury for the IWFE 2009, presented the members of the jury, some of whom were present, namely:  Abibou Ciss, Gaetano Capizzi, Robert Kalman, Maggie White.

The main objective of the event was, among other things, to make the official hand over from the IWFE of the 4th World Water Forum to the IWFE of the 5th World Water Forum. We also launched the second edition of the International "Water and Film" Events Istanbul 2009, which will take place from 16 to 22 March.

The butterfly, symbol of this evening, was created by the painter Geneviève Jost :
"I live and work in a country where water is abundant and omnipresent and the study of reflections is a major part of my work".

We chose the butterfly because it represents globalisation but also because the "monarch" butterfly migrates every year from Canada to Mexico. "Always moving, always changing, it is the image of life. It is the mirror of the world. Symbolically it reminds us that if the Earth is in trouble, water is in trouble. And the butterfly, through its delicateness reminds us of the fragility of the world".

The other partners in the launch evening were: the World Water Council, the Paris city council, the governments of Canada, France and Quebec, the International Hydraulic Programme of the UNESCO, Suez Environment and the Secretariat of the 5th World Water Forum.
